The Removal of the Constituent Assembly

Causes

  • Lenin previously attacked Kerensky for postponing elections to the Constituent Assembly, yet he permitted them to go ahead in November 1917
  • Lenin - "we must not be deceived by figures."
  • Kadets recently supported a counter-revolutionary named Alexei Kaledin (Cossack General)
  • Bolsheviks proposed Maria Spiridovna chair the meeting, whilst the Social Revolutionaries favoured Viktor Chernov
  • Civilians demonstrated against this action
  • DECREE ON THE PRESS - October 1917
  • NEW SOVIET GOVERNMENT STRUCTURE - July 1918
  • 1921 - ALL OTHER POLITICAL PARTIES BANNED

Effects

  • Bolsheviks lost to the Social Revolutionaries - (people outside Moscow and Petrograd unaware of Bolsheviks work/policies?)
  • Assembly met January 5th 1918
  • Kadets outlawed from the Assembly due to their disloyalty and support of a counter-revolution
  • Overruled by Social Revolutionaries who voted for Chernov, and the assembly was forcibly closed due to the Bolshevik's defeat
  • 12 were killed - contradictory to Marxist theology?
  • Prevented other parties from publishing their newspapers
  • Bourgeoisie unable to vote

Overall summary

Having seized power through a coup, Lenin was determined to hang on to power by dealing ruthlessly with opposition, which is seen in the immediate and forced close of the Constituent Assembly, when the Bolsheviks found themselves defeated by the Social Revolutionaries.
