The Christain Church's effect on the development of medicine in the middle ages

AdvantagesGetting Started

  • The maintenance and development of natural/herbal medicines.
  • It emphasised caring for the sick and setting up hospitals.
  • It maintained libraries of books containing medical teachings.
  • It developed centres of learning

Disadvantages

  • It didn't approve of people challenging their traditional beliefs and ideas about the cause of disease.
  • The emphasis of caring for the sick and not curing them.
  • It made sure the focus was on religion, both as a cause and possible cure for disease.
  • It disapproved of dissection.

Evaluation

The Christian Church was a massive influence to all people of Britain. They listened and abided by nearly all of what the Church said in fear of damnation. The church was the only group who particularly helped the sick to get better and were the only group who taught regular people to care for themselves. However they did not allow any room for challenging what they thought was true and so didn't let any room for the development of knowledge concerning medicine. The church also did not approved of dissection and so people could not find out how the body worked and could not find out how a disease effects the body.
