Short Term Fostering

Advantages

Children can visit their parent/parents.
Children know it is only a temporary measure.
It enables the family to remain together in the long term, but gives parents times to get over illness, breakdown or exhaustion from, say, caring for a child with special needs.
The birth parents know that their children are in safe hands.

Disadvantages

Children are suddenly put into a situation with strangers and may have difficulty settling.
Children ay be moved to several different short-term homes.
It may make the child feel insecure and homesick.
Children may become disruptive and attention-seeking.

Evaluation

Short term fostering is used when the parent/parents are unable to cope with their children for only a few weeks.
