What a family provides?
A family is a basic unit of society who all live together. A family provides love, care, shelter, encouragement, food, communication and socialization skills.

Types of family?
Nuclear family, extended family, step family, single-parent family, fostered / adoptive family and shared care families.

Looked after children?
Looked after children are looked after by the local authority. They are not able to live with their birth family so instead live in care homes or with foster families.

Foster families?
Foster families provide either long or short term stay. Carers are checked by social services before they can foster a child.

Residential care homes?
Residential care homes provide short term care for children. They look after them until they are re-placed with a new family.

Why are family structures changing?
Family structures are changing because unmarried mothers are socially acceptable, divorce laws are simple, there is improved contraception and there are more benefits for lone parents.

Family roles?
Roles in the family depend on who does what. Either parent can now get paternity leave and its more acceptable for men (as well as women) to clean, cook and tidy.

Culture?
Culture effects the roles within a family. Religion determines rules and behavior and traditions change how a family acts.

Questions to consider?
Are you fit and healthy? Are you too young or too old? Have you got a stable relationship? Do you have enough money?

Bad reasons?
You shouldnt have a baby if you only want someone to love or love you, to improve a poor relationship, peer pressure and so you can leave a job.

What is contraception?
Contraception is something which deliberately prevents pregnancy. It can be natural or un-natural.

Emergency contraception?
The morning after pill or an IUD.

Natural methods?
Natural family planning, withdrawal method or abstention.

Other types of contraception?
Male or female condom, IUD, mini pill or combined pill.
