Similarities
- ending the escape paragraph on Offred and Nick escaping- the reader could hope that they experienced a happy ending but there is a chance they didn't. Almost a happy ending to a dystopian novel.
- Mayday and female railroad= opposition to the regime? Resistance?

- Fact that there is a historical notes section which is in the future- where Gilead's regime has ended reduces the optimism experienced
- No because we are warned that history could repeat itself because all the events have happened before in the real world of the reader.
