Roman and Greek medicine

?

Roman and Greek medicene

Similarities

  • They both went to the temple of ascelpios
  • They both believed in the four humours
  • There were Greek doctors (Galen) working in the roman villages.
  • They both were not allowed to do human disections except in the great library of Alexandria

Differences

  • Due to the Roman war like nature they were more focused on quick cures on there soldiers rather than waiting to discover and debate about new remedies like the Greek philosophers did.  They also did not do observation as much.
  • The Romans were much more able to do external surgery.  This was due to there war like nature they needed to often save lives by surgery.
  • The Romans gathered there ideas by invading countries and taking there ideas were as the Greeks more traded ideas.
  • Finally although the Romans used the theory of the four humors   Galen did change it by making the person take the opposite to what the problem was.

Overall comparison

Overall I believe that yes the Greeks and Romans did have very similar ideas  as they both did use the temple of ascelpios (The Romans took the idea from the Greeks when they needed help with a plague) and they both followed some form of the Four Humours theory, the  Romans were much more focused on winning wars so did not spend much time observing new ideas and debating as they wanted quick and particle results

This is a really good example of an excellent revision resource that many students don't use enough, the compare and contrast tables. These tables provide perfect preparation for your longer exam answers and are well suited to this topic. Complete one for each set of consecutive time periods to be well prepared for the exam and help with general revision.
