CBT Treatment

Advantages

Meta analysis of 7 studies found that CBT significantly decreased positive symptoms, which suggests its highly effective for reducing relapse and enhancing recovery when diagonosed early
CBT directly challenges the problem and therefore gives the patient some control (self efficacy)

Disadvantages

More effective when used alongside drugs
Kingdon and Kirch- sample 142 schizophrenics deemed unsuitable for CBT as couldn't engage (especially true of older patients)
Small sample sizes as affects less than 1% of population
Many studies conducted with patients having CBT and drug treatment so hard to see effectiveness of CBT independantly

Evaluation

Mixed results into effectiveness of CBT alone due to complexity of schizophrenic symptoms so making a generalised statement of effectiveness for all Schizophrenics is difficult to achieve
