Peer-to-Peer Networks

Advantages

  • Only normal computers are required, there is no need to purchase an expensive server
  • Each user manages their own computer. This means that  a network manager is not required
  • Set up is done via wizards within software. No technical knowledge is required
  • Easier to manage on a small scale; Can be set up in homes / small businesses; All computers need to be maintained individually
  • No reliance on a single server; Less network traffic than client-server

Disadvantages

  • Each computer is fulfilling more than one role, it may be printing or file sharing. This increases the load
  • Data can be stored on any computer, there is no organisation to data storage
  • Security, anti virus and back up are down to the individual user
  • Each computer needs it's own anti virus scanner
  • Each computer needs its own back up schedule

Evaluation

In a peer to peer network, all the computers connected to it are of equal status. An example would be linking two home computers together. Any of the computers connected can provide printer or file sharing resources
