      • How Will It Be Used
        • Types of applications the users will need
        • How much data storage will be needed?
        • Will they work from home?
      • Existing Systems
        • Must fit in with existing OS and protocols
        • Must support peripherals all ready in use
      • Performance Required
        • Different parts of the network can have different requirements
          • Eg. Real-time e-commerce requires greater speed, capacity and reliability than in-house pay roll systems.
    • Types of Networks
      • Peer-to-peer (P2P)
        • Used in homes and small companies.
        • No server - all machines have the same status
        • Every machine can access all resources
      • Client-Server
        • Used in large organisations
        • Central server that the client machines can access
        • The server carries out many functions, such as file storage, sharing, internet access etc.
