Information

  • Power
  • As King of Thebes Oedipus has significant power in controlling the town which is why he is so determined to find out who killed Laius
  • This power seems to get to him as he doesn't think anyone else should be able to tell him what to do
  • When he is accused of killing Laius by both Tiresias and Creon he gets very angry and defensive and refuses to listen to their reasoning as he believes they're criticising & insulting him
  • This proves to be a problem as when Oedipus finds out for himself he is understandably shocked and it leads to unthinkable tragedy within his family
  • Power both metaphorically and actually blinds Oedipus.
  • He is unperceptive to the people around him and won't let them help him therefore he finds it difficult to accept their ideas and opinions
  • Oedipus is blind to what is actually being revealed around him possibly because he doesn't want to acknowledge the information or he really is just slow
  • This then physically blinds him as he is unable to live with himself especially after Jocasta kills herself and so he punishes himself
  • His power as King is what reveals everything as he is able to coerce people into telling him information he wants because he is otherwise able to threaten them and intimidate them
