Naval Race

Causes

  • Germany begins to develop and increase the size of her navy despite having no empire and little coastline to protect
  • Britain develop the most effecient naval ship of the period: Dreadnought (thicker armer, larger engine and moveable guns)
  • Britain forms the Entente Cordiale with France (involving secret naval agreement) agreeing that Britain will control the North Sea and France the Medterranean if war broke out. Britain also agrees not to interfere with France's colonial interests (Morocco) and vice-versa

Effects

  • Britain become suspicious and feel threatend because her main dominance as a power is through her navy
  • Germany wants to beat the quality of Britain's navy so engages in an arms race with Britain to build as many dreadnoughts as quick as possible
  • Germany sees this friendly agreement as an alliance, so more tension builds between Britain and Germany and Germany wants to weaken Entente Cordiale i.e. Morrocan Crises

Overall summary

Naval Race builds the competitive tension between GB and Germany. Germany oppose Entente Cordiale and so want to weaken it. Secret naval agreement is seen as war-like action by Germany
