Mind-Brain Type Identity Theory

Advantages

  • P: mental causation; E: no issue bc there's not separate mental state to interact with
  • P: dualism criticism; E: ockham's razor, it's more plausible to argument that mental states are brain states rather than independent of each other
  • P: location problem; E: language in dualistic framework so arguing M-BTI theory sounds incorrect, should be adjusted or ignored; E: "my thought about a book is located here" sounds incorrect due to framework

Disadvantages

  • P: dualism; E: conceivability argument states it's possible to have mental states without brain states so they can't be identical
  • P: multiple realisability; E: P1 - theory requires M1 to be identical to B1, P2 - possible for being with B2 to experience M1, C - M1 cannot be identical to B1
  • P: location problem; E: we cannot know yet if mental states are located in the same place as brain states

Evaluation

M-BTI theory is strong and overrides weaknesses
