Medieval Church

Advantages

  • The only hospital at this time were run by monasteries St Bartholomew's and St Thomas's in London which were established in 1123 and 1215
  • Medical schools to train doctors were established in this period, usually ran by the church.

Disadvantages

  • The parish priest was the center of people's lives. He preached that God punished people for their sins with disease and death.
  • The church controlled education; only priests and monks could read and write. The Pope condemned new ideas which contradicted the Bible.
  • Works of Galen was rediscovered.
  • The Church encouraged people to go on pilgrimages to place such as Canterbury to cure their diseases.
  • The Church banned dissection until the 14th century.

Evaluation

Overall the Church didn't allow new discoveries as they were fearful that religion would be taken out of the equation and that the Church's power would be overthrown.
