Theory

Strengths

  • Criticising strain theory - it over predicts delinquency
  • The majority of the time delinquents conform to societies rules
  • Delinquents occasionally drift away from dominant values
  • Deviance is unpredictable and has no pattern
  • Subterranean values help to deviate away from dominant ones
  • Subterranean values appeal to leisure classes
  • Techniques of neutralisation help the deviant to justify their actions as not being wrong
  • There are five techniques of neutralisation
  • These values are; excitement, maschismo, toughness and a rejection of work
  • Techniques are; Denial of responsibility, denial of injury, denial of the victim, condemnation of the condemners and appeal to higher loyalties
