Marxism Evaluation

Advantages

Caste system
There are examples in history where ruling groups have used religion to justify their dominance E.G. caste system, divine right of kings
Bruce 1988- in the US conservative protestants known as the new christian right consistently support right wing political candidates who defend the interests of the rich and powerful at the expense of others.

Disadvantages

Some evidence suggests that religion does not always legitimate power and it can sometimes provide an impetus for change
The fact that religion sometimes act as an ideological force in the way explained by Marx does not explain its existence
Post modernists would argue that no individual religion has the power to manipulate masses of people now that we live in a more religiously diverse society where belief is based on choice.

Evaluation

Some sociologists argue that Marxism is out of date now that society is more secular therefore no longer impacts on the individual in the way it used to. This is underlined as less than 10% of people attend church on a regular basis.
