Marxism-

  • Role 1- (Marxism in General) Reproduces class inequality, keeps the poor in their position, saves 'good' jobs for the ruling class. Legitimates class inequality, makes the working class aceept their place in society as they believe it is based on their own failure in the education system. 
  • Evaluation-Ignores that social mobility can exist, eg. Alan Sugar
  • Role 2- (Althuser) Education as an ideological state apparatus, the ruling class need to control the working class through institutions such as education. 
  • Evaluation-Functionalists would argue that the shared norms and values school teaches are essential to maintaining social order for all and are not just for the benefit of one group.
