Events

Other information

  • Birmingham March 1963 - One of the most racially divided states - Knew they would be met with resistance. Wanted to show that Blacks wanted to integrate and knew whites would display their opposing view.
  • Chief of police sent attack dogs and people with high pressure hoses against the black adults, students and children of the peaceful protest - media coverage won sympathisers. JFK ordered integration in Birmingham to take place within 90 days.
  • Washington 1963 - Peaceful march on Washington where his 'I Have a Dream' speech was delivered. 50,000 of 250,000 people were white. Media coverage of the event put more pressure on Kennedy to pass CR legislation
  • Selma - Knew they would be able to get media coverage of resistance / corruption on voting rights. More media coverage of the intense violence against blacks prevented Lyndon B. Johnson from ignoring the issue and pass voting legislation.
