Personality

Role

  • violent, angry and bad-tempered - "I cut the pigs throat"
  • leader/power (choirmaster, tries to take control/leadership)
  • hypocritical  -makes rules and punishes people for them, but breaks them himself, says the conch isn't important and doesn't always apply, but uses it to his own advantage - "******** to the rules"
  • impulsive/animalistic (e.g. hunting), illogical, primitive or primal
  • dictator, arrogant - "I ought to be chief"
  • power-mad, controlling - "What d'you mean by not joining my tribe?"
  • proud - "the freckles on Jack's face disappeared under a blush of mortification"
  • bully - bullies Piggy (calls him 'fatty' and punches and smacks him when Piggy criticises him), calls the littluns "cry-babies" for being afraid
  • tries to become leader, but Ralph is voted for instead
  • rival to Ralph - losing the initial vote for chief damages his pride, and sets him against him from the start
  • constantly trying to gain leadership by appealing to the boys animal side (e.g. with hunting and the promise of food) instead of doing what a leader should do - e.g. lets the fire go out to go on an unsuccessful hunt
  • dictator - takes leadership from Ralph
  • Chief - takes on the title of chief and I referred to as that, not Jack anymore, reinforcing the illusion of his power
  • When he has his own tribe he stops pretending to be fair, and rules as a dictator using violence to keep control (e.g. Wilfred is tied up and beaten for no reason) and treats them like slaves, his violence is open and deliberate - e.g. hurls spear straight at Ralph after Piggy dies.
  • the antagonist, stands in the way of Ralph, but could've easily been the protagonist (both boys are leaders, physically strong and in character, and the other boys look up to them),if it weren't for his lust for power, blood, violence, and cruelty.

Development (Growth & change)

Other information

  • more civilised at start, but always has a violent or power hungry streak
  • as time goes on he become more obsessed with hunting and power, and becomes more savage and evil - his aggressive way of speaking foreshadows his violent behaviour later on in the novel
  • his obsession represents how the group are losing their civilisation, becoming more barbaric
  • He represents the evil that Golding believed was in everyone, and that would come out if the rules of society were taken away
  • discards the rules of society more as it progresses - doesn't see the value of building shelters or keeping the fire going, rejecting civilisation.
  • becomes more desperate for power as time goes on
  • always goes further than the other boys - first to injure and kill pigs.
  • at the end, he becomes a little boy again - when asked who's leader he stops himself from challenging Ralph, knowing that society would disapprove of him. - "A little boy who wore the remains of an extraordinary black cap on his red hair and who carried the remains of a pair of spectacles at his waist, started forward, then changed his mind and stood still."
  • represents evil and savagery in the story
  • often described like an animal (e.g. when hunting, 'war' paint - "awesome stranger" making him feel less responsible for his actions, "ape-like", "bloodthirsty snarling", the choir described as black birds at the start)
  • conflicts with Ralph throughout the story
  • he's sneaky, twists Jacks words and accuses him of things e.g. "He'd never have got us meat", makes Ralph look bad  - e.g. when the fire goes out and Ralph shouts at him, he apologises, making Ralph seem like the bad guy
  • connected to the forest - "The forest and he were very still."
  • uses fear to control them - "my hunters will protect you from the beast" getting them to join his tribe
  • "compulsion to track down and kill", "madness" comes into his eyes when thinking of hunting - early sign of savagery
  • always makes a big deal over not being a coward
  • not actually liked - at the first vote he's only voted for by the choir, with "dreary obedience"
