Longitudinal studies

Advantages

  • Changes in opinions and attitudes can be tracked over time
  • Correlations can be identified
  • In-depth and rich data
  • Rapport, verstehen and empathy can be achieved
  • Valid

Disadvantages

  • Time consuming and costly
  • Small sample
  • Not representative
  • Not generalisable
  • Attrition will occur - people die/drop out lowering representativeness
  • Researcher could go native
  • Hawthorne effect could occur

Evaluation

Interpretivists would like this method of research as it gives them a greater insight to their participants lives and allows them to gain verstehen and rapport with the sample.
