Advantages

  • Independent from government.
  • Very thorough and in depth.
  • Draft own bills when it proposes new law/legislation.
  • Considerable legal and non-political expertise.

Disadvantages

  • 1/3 of recommendations not implemented.
  • Government not obliged to follow any recommendations.
  • Lack of power.
  • No powers to change or re-write laws.
  • Lengthy, time-consuming investigations.
  • Investigations may not be thorough as there can be 30 going on at once.

Evaluation

Overall, the law commission is useful as it provides another, perhaps more qualified, perspective on laws. It is also separate from the government, meaning it's recommendations won't be politically biased. However, it has very little power, so all of the advantages could be futile, as the government may not even look through the recommendations, especially if they do not agree with their politics.
