Knowledge Rationalism/Innatism

Advantages

  • P: reason + intuition; E: possible to learn info without sense experience; E: Descartes + Kant - reason/intuition for morality (Moore)
  • P: maths; E: synthetic a priori (tells us something about the world without sense experience); E: Plato's slave boy analogy - innate knowledge of maths that needs to be "awakened"/geometry tells us something about space > just concept

Disadvantages

  • P: maths; E: is it just purely analytic? Perhaps rooted in deeper logic?
  • P: geometry; E: both analytic + synthetic; E: Euclidean (necessary analytic a priori) + non-Euclidean (contingent synergic a posteriori)
  • P: reliance on supernatural; E: God or realm of forms; E: empiricist arguments against innate ideas of God or Plato

Evaluation

Weaker than criticisms
