Inspector calls- Inspector Goole

?

Personality

Role

  • The inspector is perceived as a very mysterious character, who is easily able to manipulate the other characters thoughts and make them eventually come out with the truth.
  • He works very systematically; he likes to deal with "one person and one line of enquiry at a time."
  • His role in the play is to make each and every one of the characters subtly come out with the truth of what they have done.
  • Inspector Goole does a really good job of making everybody confess.

Development (Growth & change)

Other information

  • Right at the end of the play it becomes clear to the suspects that the Inspector made all of their actions link, but in actual fact they had no relation to one another.
  • By the end we question to ourselves: Is he a ghost? Goole reminds us of 'ghoul'. Is he the voice of Priestley? Is he the voice of God? Is he the voice of all our consciences?
  • He has no relation to any of the characters.
  • His actions, and the subtle way in which he does things makes everybody realise what they did were acts of unforgivableness.
