Impact of Ostpolitik on travel

Advantages

  • For diplomatic meetings and sports competitors travel from the GDR to the FRG was possible
  • Some workers were permitted to travel to the FRG, they were always over the age of 26 and married, the family they left behind would give them an incentive to return
  • These work trips provided opportunities to gain Western currency and goods to bring back
  • These workers could make several trips a year and were expected to write a Reisebericht (travel report|) on their return
  • For West Germans visiting the East the impact was less significant

Disadvantages

  • For East Germans travel to the FRG was not easy
  • The Stasi monitored these visits so their impact back in the East was limited
  • SED officials, army officers, and scientists were banned from travelling to the FRG
  • Security checks were much tighter
  • Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s the SED introduced higher currency exchange qualifications which reduced numbers travelling East

Evaluation

Overall, both a success and a failure.
