Hyde

Causes

  • "There is something wrong with him, something displeasing, something down right detestable.
  • "Creature", "Hellish" and "It wasn't like a man"
  • "Satan's signature on his face"
  • "Evil ... deformity and decay ... ugly idol in the glass

Effects

  • This is our first description of Hyde, and being one of the main characters you would have thought that it would be in a lot of detail however it isn't and this makes you suspicious of the character and the the actual description you do get is of a "truly damnable man" the image it puts in your head isn't very clear and has lots of room for adaptation.
  • These all give the reader an animalistic image of both Hyde's appearance and voice.
  • This is obviously a metaphor which is describing how he seems to be Satan himself. it also suggests he is against god, an abomination/unnatural.
  • The word "evil" and the phrase "deformity and decay" both emphisize our current perspectives of Hyde however where it says "ugly idol in the glass" shows how Jekyll sees Hyde as a god or other being that he should worship however everyone else sees Hyde as a deformity.

Overall summary

A small, deformed, disgusting man  younger    than Dr. Jekyll who is has no profession. Lanyon, Utterson and Enfield all describe seeing something evil and horrific in Edward Hyde's face. He is often compared to animals, implying that he is not a fully evolved human being.
