Hofling et al evaluation in terms of ethics

Advantages

  • nurses were stopped before administering the drug and were fully debriefed at the end
  • study had strong practical applications therefore any stress caused could be justified

Disadvantages

  • participants were observed without any consent so that valid behaviour would be shown
  • nurses were asked to go against their training and instinct which might have led to negative repercussions of those involved.

Evaluation

Nurses were stopped before administering the drug to prevent any harm happening to the patient making the study ethical as it prevents any harm happening unnecessarily as well as this ethical guideline state participants must be debriefed about the experiment giving them a chance to withdraw their data. No consent was given in the study , however they was debriefed at the end to make sure they got valid findings.
