History- Bosnian Crisis 1908-1909

Causes

  • In 1908 there was a revolution in Turkey.
  • Austria-Hungary took advantage of this to annex Bosnia.
  • This annoyed Serbia, but it was too small to resist Austria-Hungary, so it appealed to Russia for help.
  • The Russians backed Serbia's demands for an international conference.
  • Everything depended on the Kaiser.

Effects

  • The Kaiser was annoyed with Austria-Hungary because it it had acted against Bosnia without consulting him, but he still promised his full support.
  • Russia was too weak to fight and faced with the opposition of Germany, was forced to back down.

Overall summary

-Austria Hungary not felt that it had the full support of Germany, which affected how it acted in 1914- blank cheque.                                         -Italy didn't like the idea of Austria-Hungary expanding into the Balkans- became less keen on the Triple Alliance.                                             -Russia was humiliated by Germany so started making military improvements.                                                                                                   -Britain, France and Russia became closer together, common enemy.                                                                                                                 -Serbia looked to Russia for further support and wanted revenge.
