Grammar Schools

Advantages

  • Some more intelligent pupils may get labelled as nerdy in normal schools.
  • More intelligent pupils might feel peer pressure to behave in a way that is percieved more cool, which will effect their attianment
  • More able students may be held back at schools of all ability
  • The idea is that grammar schools have children that want to learn and thrive therefore the peer pressure is to do well
  • Allows less able students to get the attention and help they need

Disadvantages

  • The test is not the most accurate way to measure wether or not a child is academically able
  • Creates social division
  • by being dubbed as less able this could lead to the self fulfilling prophecy and the kids then not believing in themselves or their abilities

Evaluation

Overall I do not believe grammar schools are succesful. They create social division which leads to some children feeling they are better and more superior than others. By having schools for the less able the kids that attend this school have been labelled as less likely to achieve good grades therefore the self fulfilling prophecy will take place and they will start to believe they are not capable of academic success. On the other hand grammar schools have kids more willing and motivated to work therefore due to peer pressure academic kids will try harder and put more effort in in order to "fit in".
