Advantages

firm is able to respond more quickly to market conditions by expanding or contracting capacity
more efficient use of resources
cut down on costs, labour costs
make more use of specialists

Disadvantages

requires a culture change
dependant on other organisations
negative effect on motivation due to redundancies
downsizing and focusing on core activities will allow less opportunity for future expansion
skills and expertise lost

Evaluation

A flexible workforce is a workforce that is adaptable to changing conditions and demands. A flexible workforce is likely to be multiskilled, well trained and non resistant to change.
