Factors affecting transpiration

Causes

  • Light
  • Temperature
  • High Humidity
  • Low humidity

Effects

  • Stimulates the Stoma to open to allow more gas for photosynthesis. Water could evaporate out on a sunny day and if there is little rain it could dehydrate
  • Increases rate of evaporation of water from the spongy cells, and reduces air humidity
  • High humidity means more water vapour in the air so lower water gradient between the leaf and air resulting lower evaporation
  • Low humidity means less water vapor in the air so a higher water gradient between the leaf and the air resulting in more evaporation

Overall summary

Transpiration can be fatal to a plant on a hot sunny day, as it could lose too much water and become very dehydrated. The plant tries to counter this by having guard cells close the stoma, and by wilting. But days of this will result in the death of the plant. However transpiration is needed to cool off the plant in the same way sweat cools and animal.
