Advantages

Disadvantages

  • Effectiveness-Early procedures turned people into zombies
  • Side effects-Early procedures had disabling effects
  • Appropriateness- some believe a person's psychological self isn't physical
  • Participant involvement- none, in the hands of the surgeon and patient has no control over what happens, for better and worse
  • Ethics-Informed consent:used in mental asylums, Irreversible damage: effects can't be reversed

Evaluation

Modern techniques of psycho-surgery have overcome many of the significant problems of early techniques and it offers last resort treatment to desperate patients for whom nothing else has worked. However, it is highly invasive, its used are limited and its permanent nature means it is far from risk-free
