Evaluate the usefulness of stratified sampling as a method of sampling.

Advantages

for different sub populations you can opt for different techniques - helps in improving efficiency + accuracy of estimation
can generate results which are more representative of whole population
very flexible + applicable to many geographical enquires

Disadvantages

implementation is expensive
proportions of sub-sets must be known + accurate if it is to work properly
can be hard to stratify questionnaire data - accurate up to date data may not be available + may be hard to identify peoples age or social background effectively

Evaluation

The researcher divides the population into separate groups called strata. A probability sample is then drawn from each group.
