ENERGY RESOURCES-Solar cells and heating systems

Advantages

  • renewable resource-no waste of non renewable resources
  • free-needs no fuel/produces no waste
  • can be used in sunny countries where there is no electricity available to a remote place

Disadvantages

  • doesn't work at night-not a constant supply
  • very expensive to build solar power stations and can be unreliable unless in a sunny climate
  • (cells) Inefficient- cost a great deal compared to the amount of electricity they'll produce in a lifetime

Evaluation

In heating systems-Thermal energy from the sun is used to heat water into steam that has kinetic energy. This kinetic energy is then used to turn turbines giving them kinetic energy. The turbines then cause generators to rotate which transfers the energy to electrical energy.Solar cells-convert light energy directly into electrical energy.
