ENERGY RESOURCES-Nuclear Power

Advantages

  • Costs about the same as coal so not expensive to make
  • Does not produce smoke or CO2- does not contribute to greenhouse effect
  • produces huge amounts of energy from small amounts of fuel-less fuel needs to be transported
  • small amounts of waste-reducing adverse effect on environment
  • reliable-can be produced 24hrs a day

Disadvantages

  • Non renewable source
  • although not much waste is produced its dangerous- must be sealed up and buried for many years to allow the radioactivity to die away
  • reliable but a lot of money spent on safety

Evaluation

USe uraniam which can decay through nuclear fission. In this process nuclear energy is converted to thermal energy.This is used to heat water to turn it into steam that has kinetic energy. This kinetic energy is then used to turn turbines- giving them kinetic energy. The turbines then cause generators to rotat which transfers the energy to electrical energy.
