Electoral College

Advantages

  • Upholds federalism & state interests (small and large)
  • Largely reflects the popular will
  • US wide consensus- forces candidates to broaden their appeal across USA
  • Clear, decisive results

Disadvantages

  • Over representation of smaller states- undermines federalism
  • Popular vote loser can win presidency/faithless rogue electors
  • Focus on Swing voters
  • 'Winner takes all' distortion

Evaluation

As a constitutional pillar of federalism, it is clear that the 'electoral college' system is an effective means of providing a clear executive leader for 4 years. However, it is also clear that this leader does not fully represent 'the people' of the USA, or indeed the states they live within, something that the founding fathers could not foresee.
