- ELECTORAL COLLEGE
- HOW IT WORKS
- each state gets a certain amount of electors depending on their population
- each state gets 2 senators and then the represent-atives are equal to the population
- no. of senators + no. of reps = no. of electoral college votes
- california: 2 senators + 53 reps = 55 electors
- Wyoming: 2 senators + 1 rep = 3 electors
- no. of senators + no. of reps = no. of electoral college votes
- each state gets 2 senators and then the represent-atives are equal to the population
- there are 538 electoral college votes
- to win the presidency the candidate must win 270
- what happens if theres a 269-269 split??!!
- HOPS elects the president from the 3 candidates with the most ECV's
- senate elects VP from the 2 VPs with the most ECV's
- only happened twice in 1800 and 1824
- what happens if theres a 269-269 split??!!
- to win the presidency the candidate must win 270
- each state votes for a candidate and their running mate using the winner takes all method (except Maine and Nebraska who use proportional represen-tation)
- the popular vote in each state is counted and whoever wins that state wins all the electoral college votes of that state
- 2016 - Trump won the popular vote in North Carolina and so received 15 ECV's
- the popular vote in each state is counted and whoever wins that state wins all the electoral college votes of that state
- once all the states have voted on election day (Tuesday Nov 8th 2016) the US then has a president elect (Donald Trump) from the candidate who seemed to have won the ECV
- a candidate can win the ECV but lose the popular vote - Trump 2016
- later on in the year the electoral college then meets to cast their votes to the candidate which their state voted for - 55 voters should be voting for Hilary
- FAITHLESS ELECTORS IS A POSSIBILITY - could vote against their state - happened in 2000
- if the electoral college did not vote the way they were supposed to, the presidency could change - Donald to Hilary?!?!
- each state gets a certain amount of electors depending on their population
- WHAT IS IT
- institution established by founding fathers to elect the president indirectly
- never actually meets
- the electors meet in their state capitals to cast ballots for pres and vice pres
