US System for Elections

Advantages

  • 1. frequent- allows participation
  • 2. length- means best candidate is chosen, get to know them- broad spectrum of candidates
  • 3. donate money to a particular party/ideology= freedom of expression (amendment 1)
  • 4. Electoral college- stops one state deciding/ small states have a voice
  • 5. Direct Democracy
  • 6. incumbency- very likely they will win as good at their job- experienced congressmen are brought back
  • 7. no nationwide newspaper- more balanced view

Disadvantages

  • 1. turnout often low- frequency, length, apathy, boredom
  • 2. money can buy votes- influence, favours, corruption
  • 3. Electoral college- 2000, 2016
  • 4. primaries favour money/media coverage
  • 5. only ever 2 parties
  • 6. people heavily reliant on the media- Advocacy groups, Debates
  • 7. election corruption Debbie Wasserman Shaltz
  • 8. 2 horse race- stop diversity
  • 9. longer it goes on more likely to be scandal
  • 10. incumbency 80% unfair advantage
  • 11. some states matter more than others- e.g. primaries

Evaluation

Overall i believe the process has more disadvantages because there can be corruption, and the electoral college is extremely harmful to democracy
