Do you agree with Genetic Screening?

Advantages

  • Helps a person to come to a personal decision about whether to have a termination or not.
  • Can reduce the amount of population who have genetic diseases, which will reduce the health bill.

Disadvantages

  • Can cause harm to the developing fetus.
  • Can cause harm to the mother.
  • Goes against peoples religion/ethics.

Evaluation

Genetic screening is when you take a few cells of a developing fetus and test them for genetic diseases such as cystic fibrosis or polydactyly. The reason many do this or support it is it can allow a person to come to a decision about whether or not to have a termination, with prior knowledge as to whether there baby has a serious illness. Also, when people have terminations due to having babies affected with genetic diseases it reduces the amount of people who have these illness in the population, which in turn will reduce the health bill of a population.
However, Genetic Screening can go against peoples ethics/ religion, which would be a reason to not have your baby genetically screened. Genetic screening can cause harm to the developing fetus, meaning that even if it does not have genetic disease it could be harmed whilst testing for them, genetic screening can also harm the mother.
Overall, Genetic Screening is a good thing as it can help to reduce the amount of genetically ill people in the population, which will reduce the health bill of a country.
