Control of Heart Rate

Causes

Movement of limbs
CO2 changes blood pH.
Adrenaline secreted into blood.
Blood pressure increases.

Effects

Detected by stretch receptors in muscles, send impulses to cardiovascular centre, more oxygen needed- increase in heart rate.
pH change detected by carotid artery and heart chemoreceptors. Which send impulses to cardiovascular centre to increase heart rate.
Presence of adrenaline increases heart rate.
Detected by stretch receptors in carotid sinus. Signal sent to cardiovascular centre, reduces heart rate.

Overall summary

Accelerator nerve increases heart rate, Vagus nerve decreases heart rate. These are the nerves that supply the heart from the medulla oblongata, which contains the cardiovascular centre.
