Composite Volcanoes

Shield Volcanoes

  • Type of boundaries:Destructive Boundaries
  • Viscous (sticky) lava-blocks up the vent
  • Pressure builds up and the top of the volcanoes are blown off in a large explosion
  • Ash clouds settle in layers on the lava as it cools
  • Steep slopes-the viscous lava cools quickly near to the top creating a cone
  • Made up of alternating layers of lava and ash
  • A pyroclastic flow rather than a lava flow. (pyroclastic flow is a mixture of hot steam, ash, rock and dust)
