Comparing Charlton et al (2000) and Williams et al (1981)

Similarities

  • They were natural experiments
  • They were real communities
  • Both communities never had access to television prior to the studies
  • Both studies conducted observations and used questionnaires to measure aggression

Differences

  • Remote island versus mainland
  • Different sense of community
  • Different guidance and parental monitoring
  • Cultural differences between the locations

Overall comparison

Children are affected by watching TV. But parents and community can lessen the influence of TV by controlling what their children watch and how they behave. Living in smaller neighbourhoods with a strong sense of community helps. However, we should always remember that, although TV and family are important, aggression occurs for a number of reasons; friendship groups, biological factors and triggers in the environment can also play a part.
