Advantages

  • Support for subjective perception rather than reflection of reality
  • Gibson's theory grounds perceptual theories in the context of their purpose - Top-down processes consider adaptive functions of perception
  • Gestalt principles show cognitive efficiency in organisation of sensory info
  • Illusions help understand impacts of environment/context on perception and supports top-down processes
  • Depth perception supports idea that higher cognitive processes are needed to interpret sensory information

Disadvantages

  • Gibson's theory is flawed due to evidence for importance of higher mental operations
  • Research is sensitive due to questioning people's perception of reality
  • Top-down processes do not always serve an adaptive function
  • Some higher mental operations in perception are innate, e.g. depth, and so not completely reliant on experience

Evaluation

Although the proposed adaptive role of perception is not always evident, it is clear that perception is achieved through bottom-up and top-down processes to aid responses to the environment.
