Advantages

  • Descriptive theories consider subjective perception of the world and help understand real behaviour
  • Heuristics provide cognitively efficient, adaptive explanation
  • Theories of decision-making can be used to promote prosocial behaviour
  • Simplicity of cognitive tasks highlight how even minimal situations produce subjectively-based decisions with little rationality
  • Understand how decision-variables can impact individual choices that may have negative consequences to self or other

Disadvantages

  • Questionable morality of nudges
  • Little understanding of why decisions are not made rationally
  • Variables regarding the question and outcome framing impacts decisions
  • Heuristics may not be completely free of logical thinking
  • Nudges/persuasion only works in specific circumstances
  • Lack of ecological validity in cognitive tasks due to removal of variables that impact perception of world

Evaluation

Cognitive understandings of decisions help to understand how subjective perception of the world is a key mechanism behind decision-making, and how certain variables can be manipulated to increase prosocial behaviours. However, many mediating variables produce exceptions to the theories that limit understanding of all behaviour.
