         ....which handles requests

         ....for resources

         ....such as data, files, software, email, web access, storage, perhiperals

Client-server networks

Advantages

  • files are stored in a central location
  • peripherals are controlled centrally
  • backups are stored and networks are controlled centrally
  • users can access stored data which is centrally controlled

Disadvantages

  • specialist network operating systems are needed
  • they are expensive
  • specialist staff such as network manager is needed
  • if any part of the network fails a lot of disruption can occur
