Chloroplasts and Mitochondria

Similarities

  • involve transport of electrons
  • ETC in membrane
  • energy release used to pump, protons, to create a gradient
  • protos diffuse down gradient, across membrane, down a stalked particle with ATP synthetase

Differences

  • chloplasts have no substrate level phosphorylation
  • in chloroplast ETC electrosn come from water
  • in mitochondria electrons come from respiration/hydrogen carriers
  • in mitochondria, hydrogen from glucose/fats/amino acids
  • in mitochondroia- oxygen is final electron acceptor
  • in cholorpats, ETC is part of cyclic photophosphorylation
  • In mitochondria, H+  in inter membranal space
  • in chlorplasts the high H+ is in the thylakoid cavity
  • mitochondria have three types of proton pump
  • chloroplast ahve 1 type of proton pump

Overall comparison
