Where does photosynthesis take place?
In the Chloroplasts
1 of 11
what is the double membrane called on chloroplasts?
chloroplast envelope.
2 of 11
what are thylakoids?
fluid filled sacs that are stacked up inside chloroplasts to form grana which are linked together by lamellae
3 of 11
name three pigments
chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotene
4 of 11
what is the role of the pigments?
they absorb the light needed for photosynthesis
5 of 11
where is the pigment found?
Inside the thylakoid membranes attached to proteins. the protein and pigment is called a photostem
6 of 11
describe the two types of pigments
primary pigment = reaction centres where electrons are excited during light dependent reaction Accessory pigment = light- harvesting systems surround primary and transfer light energy to them to boost energy for electron excitement
7 of 11
what are the two types of photosystems?
photosystem 1 (PSI) absorbs light best at 700nm and photosystem 2 (PSII) absorbs light best at 680nm
8 of 11
What is the stroma
contained within the inner membrane of the chloroplasts stroma is a gel like substance that contains enzymes, sugars, and organic acids. They also contain the chloroplasts DNA
9 of 11
what happens to carbs that are not used straight away
they are stores as starch grains in stroma
10 of 11
EXAM QUESTION - outline the importance of photosynthetic pigments in photosynthesis (4marks)
Pigments absorb light (1) electrons become excited and are raised to a higher energy level (1) accessory pigments pass energy onto primary pigments (1) primary pigments pass electrons onto electron transport chain (1)
