  • Learned to read and write at local black grade school
  • Travelled to Washington to enrol at a college for Black students - Hamilton Institute
  • Travelled around the South to raise funds and gain support for the school
  • Became one of the leaders in the Civil Rights Movement
  • Roselvelt invited himk to the White House - Respect
  • Moderate in his approach
  • Believed education, black owned businesses and hard work were key to AA success
  • National ***** Business League - Helped create businesses

Tuskegee Institute

Response

  • New school for black students in Tuskegee
  • Arrived in 1881 - school had no buildings or supplies just eager students
  • Built the institute into a major university
  • Accommodation response - Collaborate and convince for change
  • People need to earn their right in the system
  • Blacks would not share the resources and jobs of white people
  • Alienated AA communities - people believed he was just agreeing with the Whites
  • Isolated Southern Politicians
