biological theories

Advantages

  • Scientific studies can provide evidence of brain abnormalities, minimising social bias.
  • High external validity of scientific studies that back explanations of criminal behavior.
  • Real word applications explanation of inherited genes led to the use of medical and restorative justice treatment to reduce criminal behavior

Disadvantages

  • poor generalisability
  • Reductionist - Biological explanations fail to consider the relevancy of sociocultural explanations
  • No cause and effect reliability - does criminality stem from or cause brain abnormalities such as a reaction from the amygdala
  • Deterministic - The idea that human behaviour can only be fully understood in terms of genetics is  wrong since a full assessment of the causes of behaviour, particularly on a global scale, requires an interactionist viewpoint.

Evaluation

There are both good and bad biological justifications for why someone might commit a crime. The social bias of these explanations is minimal because of the thorough research provided by scientific studies. This also means that these explanations are easily transferable to the real world because they have been used to develop a medical and restorative treatment that aims to lessen criminal behaviour. Because social and biological factors of crime are not taken into account, they can only partially explain criminality.
