Atmospheric pollutants

Causes

  • Complete combustion (sufficient levels of Oxygen)
  • Incomplete combustion (insufficient levels of Oxygen)
  • Oxidation of Nitrogen at high temperatures in cars
  • Oxidation of Sulfur impurities in fossil fuels
  • Burning diesel
  • Carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere
  • Carbon monoxide is breathed in
  • Nitrogen oxides are breathed in
  • Nitrogen oxides or sulfur dioxide enters the atmosphere
  • Carbon particulates enter the atmosphere

Effects

  • Carbon dioxide is released
  • Carbon monoxide is released
  • Nitrogen oxides are released
  • Sulfur dioxide is released
  • Carbon particulates are released
  • Is a greenhouse gas (will contribute to global warming)
  • Binds onto haemoglobin (used for transferring Oxygen across the body) until there's none left
  • Can trigger asthma
  • Makes acid rain
  • Causes global dimming (reflects light into space)

Overall summary

These are the different ways in which these atmospheric pollutants are made and their effect on the environment and humans
