Lack of maternal influence when growing up may be the reason for the edgy relationship between Amir and Baba. Lack of a mother also affected Hassan.

Amir is desperate for his father to love him, and is immensely jealous of Hassan and Baba's relationship.

Baba is disappointed in Amir, and Amir knows it.

Dominated by society pressures and father's expectations. 

Baba has the best intentions for Amir.
