Appeasement 1933-1939

Advantages

  • The Allies were more worried about the spread of communism at the time and the danger to world peace posed by Stalin and the USSR. Many saw Hitler as a buffer to communism.
  • Everyone remembered the horrors of WW1 and wanted to avoid another war like this at almost any cost.
  • Britain did not want to face up to Germany without the support of the USA, who had been following a policy of isolationism, or the British empire and neither of these were guaranteed support.
  • Many felt that the Treaty of Versailles had been unreasonable and once Hitler had put this right, Germany would become a peaceful nation again.
  • Britain and France still had large debts from WW1 and huge unemployment from the Depression. They could not afford another war.
  • The British Government believed that the armed forces were not ready for a war. Britain only started rearming in 1935 and they though that they were far behind Germany.

Disadvantages

  • Germany was rearming publicly and quickly each year. The longer Britain and France appeased Hitler, the stronger his army would become and the harder it would be to defeat them,
  • With every success that Hitler got away with, he gained confidence and his risks became greater and greater. At some point, Britain and France needed to stand up to Hitler to prevent a later bigger and more dangerous move.
  • It was obvious that Hitler despised communism. Appeasement sent the message to Stalin and the USSR that Britain and France would not stand in Hitler's way if he invaded Russia.
  • Hitler had already seen how his allies had got away with aggression, especially Japan and Italy, which encouraged Hitler to take action as well.

Evaluation

Appeasement was the right thing for the allies to do at the time. Before 1939, the British morale was low and the army was not prepared to fight. There would have been a higher risk of defeat if Britain declared war any earlier. However, some historians argue that Germany was not actually as strong as the Allies thought, and the propaganda made Germany seem a lot more powerful than they were. Therefore Hitler wasn't ready for war either before 1939, especially because the Four-Year-Plan was not supposed to finish until 1940.
